When starting an apprenticeship or traineeship, employers and apprentices/trainees sign a training contract. It specifies the qualification that the apprentice/trainee is working towards.
Qualifications are periodically updated to improve the course content so the most current and relevant skills are taught. When an existing qualification is superseded by an updated qualification, RTOs need to change and train people for the new qualification.
The Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA) periodically issues a General direction—Learner transition requiring RTOs to transition students to the most current training package.
So that RTOs, employers and apprentices/trainees have training contracts that reflect the most up-to-date qualifications, the following streamlined process has been developed for transitioning qualifications.
Most requests to transition are initiated by RTOs. However, employers and apprentices/trainees may also initiate the transition process.
As soon as you become aware that you need to transition your qualification:
- Complete and submit the form*: Apprenticeship/Traineeship Variation of Training Contract (Transition to current qualification (doc - 153kb)) to your Apprenticeship Network provider.
- The Apprenticeship Network provider submits to the VRQA the details from the original training contract featuring the new qualification code.
- The VRQA updates the apprentice's record in the database showing the new qualification.
*This form is only for apprentices/trainees remaining with the same employer who are just transitioning from a superseded qualification. Use other forms for different purposes.
