Completing an Apprenticeship or Traineeship

What happens at the conclusion of an apprenticeship or traineeship depends on whether the apprenticeship or traineeship commenced under competency-based completion arrangements.

Competency-based completion of apprenticeships and traineeships

Competency-based completion applies to all trainees and apprentices whose training commenced on or after the dates specified below. Please note these dates refer to the date training commenced with a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) and not the commencement date of the training contract.

All Engineering Industry Apprenticeships1 January 2008
All other industries (except those listed below)1 July 2010
All Automotive industry Apprenticeships
Certificate III in Electrotechnology - Electrician
Certificate III in Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning
Certificate III in Plumbing
Certificate III in Carpentry, Certificate III in Joinery
Certificate III in Carpentry and Joinery
Certificate III in Floristry
1 January 2011

The apprenticeship is completed when all the competencies of the structured training have been achieved and the employer has returned written confirmation of the apprentice's competence as an employee in the workplace to the RTO.

There is no set form to complete for this final confirmation, although completion may be formalised by signing off on the training plan.

RTOs must ensure that clear advice has been provided to the employer that this confirmation completes the training contract for an apprenticeship or traineeship. When the RTO has received the confirmation from the employer, the RTO will enter the information into the apprenticeship database known as DELTA.

The VRQA will then write to both the employer and the apprentice, confirming that the apprenticeship is completed.

Completion of other apprenticeships

For apprenticeships commenced prior to the above dates the following completion process is undertaken:

  • the RTO advises VRQA that formal study has been completed
  • the VRQA contacts employers shortly before the end of the nominal duration of an apprenticeship to confirm that the apprentice has completed the term of the training contract and has the skills and experience to complete the apprenticeship.

Once this has been confirmed the VRQA sends the apprentice a letter confirming completion.

Early completion of an apprenticeship (for apprenticeships that commenced before the introduction of competency-based completion arrangements)

If an employer and training provider assess an apprentice as having achieved all the prescribed competencies for their apprenticeship program and course, the parties to the training contract may apply for early completion of the apprenticeship.

A Statement of Completion form (doc - 108.5kb) must be completed by the apprentice and the employer and submitted to an Australian Apprenticeship Support Network Provider.

Evidence of completion of an apprenticeship or traineeship
