A transition to a new qualification is required when an existing qualification is superseded by an updated qualification.
When commencing an apprenticeship or traineeship, employers and apprentices/trainees sign a training contract that specifies the qualification that the apprentice or trainee will be undertaking.
Qualifications are periodically updated to ensure that the content of courses continuously improves and the most current and relevant skills are taught. The Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA) periodically issues a General Direction on Transition and Teach-Out requiring Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) to transition students to the most current training package.
In order to assist RTOs, employers and apprentices/trainees to ensure that training contracts reflect the most up-to-date qualifications, the following streamlined process has been developed for transitioning qualifications:
- an Apprenticeship/Traineeship Variation of Training Contract (Transition to current qualification) form (doc - 97.5kb) is submitted to an Australian Apprenticeship Support Network Provider (AASN) either at the time of signing an initial training contract or for an existing training contract at a time requested by the parties. Most requests to transition are initiated by RTOs however employers and apprentices/trainees may also initiate the transition process
- the AASN submits the details from the original training contract to the VRQA featuring the new qualification code
- the VRQA updates the apprentice’s record in the Direct Entry Level Training Administration database (DELTA) to the new qualification.
This form should only be used when an apprentice or trainee is remaining with the same employer and the only change is that they are transitioning from a superseded qualification.
