A new offence strengthening protections for children has been created under the Crimes Act 1958. A ‘failure to protect’ offence, commencing on 1 July 2015, will apply to persons in positions of authority within organisations that exercise care, supervision or authority over children.
Information resources about the ‘failure to protect’ offence will be provided as they become available.
The new offence is part of the Victorian Government response to the Victorian Parliament’s Inquiry into the Handling of Child Abuse by Religious and other Non-Government Organisations.
Further information about the Victorian Government response is available at the Betrayal of Trust Implementation website.
