Homestay alert for schools - new rooming house laws

This year, the Victorian Government implemented the Rooming House Operators Act 2016 requiring the registration of rooming houses in Victoria.

For schools, the Act only applies where a school has arranged accommodation for students at a homestay providing paid accommodation to four or more people at the premises. This excludes the homestay provider’s family and applies to both domestic and international students.

Many CRICOS providers, including the Department of Education and Training, have their own education provider standards for homestay accommodation which set a limit of one, or at most two students in any homestay.
