A message from the Director

An investigation into apprenticeships in the automotive industry has been conducted by the VRQA. A number of issues were uncovered, including inappropriate supervision and training practices.

As a result, eight employers have lost their ability to employ apprentices and a number of training contracts have been cancelled.

Cases such as these undermine public confidence in the system of apprenticeships and traineeships. The VRQA will continue to work with unions, industry and relevant government agencies to conduct further apprenticeships campaigns in 2015.

Employers can use the Employer Checklist to check their compliance with regulatory requirements. The checklist is easy to use and asks important questions about the training contract, training plan, supervision and workplace facilities.

A Review of Quality Assurance in Victoria’s VET System has been announced by the Minister for Training and Skills. The VRQA is responsible for regulating about 25 per cent of registered training organisations (RTOs) in Victoria, with the remainder of RTOs regulated by the Australian Skills Quality Authority.

The VRQA welcomes the review and any findings that will improve training quality. Further details of the review are available in this edition of e-news.

Finally, a summary of the VRQA 2014 Client and Stakeholder Research is now available on the VRQA website. The research demonstrates continued strong satisfaction with the VRQA among our providers and stakeholders. Where the research results point to potential for further improvement, we will work to enhance our services.

Thank you to those who participated in the research.
