A message from the Director

The VRQA held its annual Board and Stakeholder Breakfast earlier this week. Around 60 stakeholders attended, representing all sectors regulated by the VRQA.

A revised format prompted in-depth discussion among our diverse stakeholders about how the VRQA can contribute to quality education and training in a range of settings.

Thank you to those who attended and shared their views. These discussions will inform a forthcoming Board planning session.

The Education and Training Reform Amendment (Child Safe Schools) Act 2015 gives the VRQA new responsibilities and powers for the regulation of school education. These changes come into effect on 21 December 2015 unless proclaimed earlier.

The VRQA will be responsible for regulating school providers against new Child Safe Standards. The VRQA will also gain several new powers that can be used in some instances to ensure child safety.

A new criminal offence for failing to protect children from the substantial risk of sexual abuse has also been created under the Crimes Act 1958. The offence commences on 1 July 2015 and will apply to persons in positions of authority within organisations that exercise care, supervision or authority over children.

The above changes form part of the Victorian Government response to the Inquiry into the Handling of Child Abuse by Religious and other Non-Government Organisations and the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses into Child Sexual Abuse.

Further information is available in this edition of e-news.
