The VRQA is holding a briefing on Practical financial governance skills for schools as part of its ongoing support for existing and prospective schools in understanding the prescribed Minimum Standards for school registration.
John's presentation will focus on the factors influencing the financial viability and sustainability of independent schools. It will cover: legislative requirements research regarding attributes of a financially sustainable school; accounting for non-accountants; trends in income, expenditure, staffing and debt; analysing school financial performance to identify strengths and weaknesses; and related governance practices including budgeting, risk assessment, reporting procedures and policies.
If you are attending on behalf of a school that is already registered, you may wish to complete the financial health assessment sheet and bring it to the session as a reference document. If you populate the worksheet with 2017 actual results and 2018 budget results it will calculate key ratios for your school that can be compared with average school ratios presented by John. For example if John quotes the average amount of debt per student in independent schools, you can refer to your own school figures as a comparison.
- Bookings are essential as there are limited spaces available. A maximum of two representatives from each organisation may register.
- To book, you must register for the session.
- The closing date for registration is
2 days prior to the session date.
