Privacy and confidentiality

Information privacy

The VRQA handles complaints in accordance with the requirements of the Information Privacy Principles and the Privacy and Data Protection Act 2014 (Vic).

When handling your complaint, we will:

  • only collect, use and disclose personal information where it is necessary to do so or where authorised or required by law.
  • secure any personal information we collect to prevent loss, misuse, unauthorised access or disclosure.

Confidentiality

The VRQA treats all complaints as confidential. Unless you give us permission to do so, we will not disclose your identity as the complainant, to:

  • the education and training provider or employer you are complaining about
  • other government agencies.

When we investigate a complaint, however, it may be necessary for us to reveal certain details to the school, school boarding premises, registered training organisation, student exchange organisation, non-school senior secondary or foundation secondary provider, or employer so they can respond. It may also be necessary for us to reveal certain details to other government agencies.

If your complaint is about an issue that only affects you, it may not be possible for us to investigate without identifying you as the complainant.

You can talk to our complaints team at any time about privacy issues.

Anonymous complaints

We accept anonymous complaints. However, if you do not identify yourself as the complainant we may be limited in our ability to investigate your complaint.

You can talk to our team without identifying your details to discuss the situation you are concerned about.
