A message from the Director

Welcome to the first edition of e-news for 2015. Following the change in government late 2014, the VRQA is now the responsibility of the Minister for Education the Hon. James Merlino MP and Minister for Training and Skills the Hon. Steve Herbert MP.

From January this year, the department that the VRQA is placed within is the Department of Education and Training, led by new Secretary Gill Callister.

I look forward to working with our new Ministers and Secretary as well as continuing to work with the VRQA’s providers and stakeholders.

A new employer checklist has been developed to help employers of apprentices and trainees make sure that they meet regulatory requirements.

The checklist is brief and easy to use. It asks important questions about the training contract, training plan, supervision and workplace facilities, among other questions.

Apprentices and trainees can also use this resource to check that their apprenticeship is progressing as it should.

Competency based completion arrangements ensure that apprentices and trainees can progress through their apprenticeship or traineeship at a rate that reflects their skill development. However, understanding these arrangements and planning for skills development sometimes presents challenges for employers.

The Department of Education and Training has developed useful frequently asked questions to help employers to understand and implement competency based completion, and one employer has shared his story of competency based completion arrangements in his business.

Finally, as the 2015 school year commences, it is timely to remind school governors, principals and administrators of the minimum standards and other requirements that must be met for the effective operation of schools.

Further details are available in this edition of e-news.
