Cancelling an apprenticeship or traineeship

There are slightly different rules depending on whether you are cancelling an apprenticeship or a traineeship.

Important information: we regulate the training contract, not the employment contract. This means we have no power or authority to investigate or intervene if you decide to stop employing an apprentice or trainee.

For information relating to employment contracts, see:

Cancelling a training contract ends the apprenticeship or traineeship. You should consider if a temporary suspension is more appropriate. For more information, see:

Cancelling an apprenticeship

When your apprentice starts with you, they will be on probation, usually for the first 3 months. During this time, if either you or your apprentice are unhappy then the contract can be cancelled.

After the probationary period ends, both you and your apprentice must agree before the contract can be cancelled.
